KRFC The Story so far….
Once upon a time in a town not far, far away, there was a rugby match…. here’s how it went.
Kinross started the game slowly in comparison to the Glenrothes players who had come out of the blocks looking sharp.
Kinross conceded early, after Glenrothes made a line break and with a good offload they were in for the first try of the game. They went on to double their lead a few minutes later after a well-worked line out in the far corner. Glenrothes scored their 3rd try of the game at the 20-minute mark. The Kinross players did not panic as they settled into the game, shook the pre-season nerves off and started to play some attacking rugby. With 5 minutes to go in the half, the Kinross backs produced a great move spreading the ball the width of the pitch, placing it in Graham Kilby's hands. He danced up the pitch and evaded 3 separate Glenrothes tacklers the typical Graham Kilby way, through rather than around. With the first Kinross points of the day on the board, John McMurdo stepped up to take the kick but the subsequent conversion was narrowly missed.
We entered the halfway point with the scores at 17-5 to the home side and that stayed the same until the 58th minute after a period of back and forth between the two teams, when Johnathan Venters walked over the line from a Stuart Hunter offload. This came from a pick-and-go at the base of the ruck after a great spell of attacking play from Kinross to work their way up the pitch. John McMurdo narrowly missed the conversion for the second time but made up for it only 5 minutes later. As Kinross set for a scrum on their own 5-metre line, John made a break from the back of the scrum before sending a kick downfield, that he managed to chase down himself. When he tried to recover the ball he was brought down by the last defender leading to a penalty try taking the scores to 17-17 with 15 minutes to play. The game went back and forth between the sides for the final section of the game before Glenrothes managed to push themselves over the line, narrowly clinching the match.
Although the result didn’t go our way on the day, there were many positives for this young Kinross team to take moving forward and sets us on a great path to continue growing this season
Saturday was a great spectacle for both sets of fans and we can only hope that the rest of the season will be full of some action-packed rugby.
Massive thank you to all the supporters who made the trip to come and support the team, it’s always well received by the lads.
We will catch up with you all next week as we break down the play-by-play of our next game against Corstorphine Cougars this Saturday.
